Richard J. Flener, 92 years old of Monroeville, Indiana, passed away at 6:20 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2015 in the Dekalb Memorial Hospital located in Auburn, Indiana. Richard was born on Friday, July 21, 1922 in Bargersville, Indiana the son of the late Ira Estel Flener and the late Delia F. (Hart) Flener. He married Rose Mary Anderson on February 16, 1946 in Terre Haute, Indiana and she survives. Richard served his country in the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific. Richard was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church-Monroeville, where he was a former Treasurer and had worked for 6 years in the Associated Churches Food Bank at St. Mark's; American Legion Post #420-Monroeville; and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Richard retired in 1979 from the United States Postal Service with 31 years of service. Following his retirement, he also worked as a caretaker for the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery for 5 years. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Rose Mary Flener of Monroeville, IN; son, Richard J. (Becky) Flener Jr. of New Haven, IN; daughter, Janice (Glen) Myers of Auburn, IN; daughter, Patricia (Gary) Prichard of Hershey, PA; 7 grandchildren: Linda (Jerry) Gill; JoAnn Myers; Katherine Brown; Jenna Sprowl; Kristin Flener; Christopher Prichard; and Sarah Grace Prichard; 6 great-grandchildren: Andrew Gill; Alexis (Russell) Davis; Katherine Sprague; Patricia Gill; Ashley Brown; and Lucas Brown; 1 great-great-grandson: Harley Davis. Preceding Richard in death were 2 brothers, Woody Ray Flener & Chester Irving Flener. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015 in the St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 201 East South St. Monroeville, Indiana with Pastor David Stephy officiating. Interment will follow in the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery. Friends will be received one hour prior to services Saturday, February 28, 2015 in the St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 201 East South St. Monroeville, IN. Preferred memorials are to Monroeville EMS.
