Harriet Ilo (Rice) Highland, 70, of New Haven, Indiana passed away at 8:30 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2015 at Town House Retirement Community following a three year illness. She was born on December 22, 1944 to Robert J. Rice and Estella M. (Kitchen) Rice. Her father preceded her in death. On June13, 1964 she married Ronald K. Highland at the First United Methodist Church in Decatur, Indiana. Harriet attended Leo United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Sierra Club and Acres of Fort Wayne. She graduated from Monmouth High School Class of 1962 and then International Business College in 1963. Prior to having her children, she was employed at Mass Mutual. She was also a self-employed business owner of Highland Bears for over 30 years. She traveled around to different craft shows to show her bears. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Ron Highland of New Haven; daughter, Jennifer (Otis) King of Fort Wayne; daughter, Rhonda (Joel) Huebner of Fort Wayne; son, Douglas (Tammy) Highland of Fort Wayne; mother, Estella Rice of Decatur; sister, Nancy (Gerald) Reau of Lima, OH; brother, David (Suzy) Rice of Decatur; and sister, Rebecca (Bud) Kemp of Decatur. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, Alisha, Chantelle, Luke, & Joshua Huebner; Cody & Ashley Highland; and Arowynn & Ava King and one great-grandchild, Hunter, arriving in December 2015. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 11, 2015 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Pastor David Heim officiating. Family and friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, September 10, 2015 at the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur. Preferred memorials are to ALS or Acres Land Trust.
