Elizabeth Ann Sorgen

Elizabeth Ann "Beth" Sorgen, 84 years old of Monroeville, IN, passed away on Friday, June 3, 2016 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne.

She was born on Friday, August 21, 1931 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Beth was the daughter of the late Lee Ernest Waller and the late Miriam Naomi (Bixler) Waller. She was united in marriage on March 8, 1952 to D. DuWayne Sorgen and he preceded her in death on January 27, 2009.

Beth was a member of the St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Monroeville, and also sang in the church choir and taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the A.A.U.W. (American Association of University Women); Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority; Heritage Home Ec. Club; Monroeville Historical Society; Indiana Retired Teachers Association; Lincoln Highway Association; Fort Wayne Education Fund; Indiana Two Steppers Country Dance Club; and she volunteered at Science Central of Fort Wayne Indiana and many area elementary schools.

Beth was an elementary teacher, retiring after 36 years. She was employed at East Allen County Schools, teaching 2nd grade at Monroeville Elementary. Beth graduated in 1949 from South Side High School and in 1953 from Indiana University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education. Following her graduation, she received her Master’s in Education in 1967 from the University of St. Francis. Beth had many hobbies, which she volunteered her time to assist and help in any way she could. But her #1 hobby and joy was her family.

Surviving is her son, Keith A. Sorgen of Monroeville; daughter, Karen L. (Brian) Hoeppner of Woodburn; daughter-in-law, Mary Sorgen of Monroeville; sister, Miriam Ruth Strasser of Ft. Wayne; sister-in-law, Rachel Schmidt of Leesburg, FL; six grandchildren, Phil (Jill) Sorgen, Sarah (Christopher) Wolf, Theresa (Steve) Sorgen – Burleson, Katie Pickens, Josh (Lindsey) Hoeppner, and Marc (Kristen) Hoeppner; and eight great grandchildren, Austin Sorgen, Adeline Sorgen, Nathan Wolf, Dalton Burleson, Morgen Burleson, Henry Pickens, Annie Hoeppner, and Brayden Hoeppner.

Preceding Beth in death were a son, Kevin Sorgen and brother, Luther Waller.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday June 8, 2016 in the St. Mark Lutheran Church, Monroeville with Rev. David Williamson officiating. Interment will follow in the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
