L. W. "Moe" Brewer

W. “Moe” Brewer , 81, of Decatur, went home to the Lord on September 5, 2016. Lavern William “Moe” Brewer was born on December 19, 1934 to Jack and Elvira (Messmann) Brewer in Fort Wayne, who both preceded him in death. He disliked his name and used his nickname Moe, from the time he was 7 years old. He was a true Renaissance man in the there wasn’t anything he couldn’t do. He attended 12 years at Lutheran schools and graduated in 1952 form Concordia High School in Ft. Wayne.
He met the love of his life, Connie Geiger, when he drove a race car for her father. They married July 13, 1957 when he was on leave from the United States Army. Moe played fast pitch softball, pitching until he was 50. He started driving go-karts and at one time held 12 track records in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. He was one of the original owners of Sportsman’s Park, which became Baer Field Raceway in Ft. Wayne. He was a flag man for that track for a few years. Moe and Connie moved to Decatur in 1965 and joined Zion Lutheran Church in Decatur. He was active in the church, holding many offices. In addition, a favorite past time that Moe enjoyed was golfing and you would find him on the course early in the morning.   Moe also was a member of the Decatur Lions Club, holding many offices in that organization as well. Moe was also a member of the American Legion Post #43 in Decatur. Moe started Top Supply Company in Decatur in the early 1970’s and continued in the operation of the business until his retirement in 1998. In 1979, Moe and Connie took western square dance lessons and he soon became a well-known western square dance caller. He called in Northern Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan for over 30 years. In his later years be became interested in harness racing and owned a harness horse for a while. In the mid-nineties, Connie and Moe began spending their winters in Tarpon Springs, Florida. Moe had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to tell funny stories. No matter how many times you heard them, he made you laugh. Moe will be missed by his many friends and is survived by his wife of 59 years, Connie; his sons: Jack (Elaine) Brewer and Rex (Bea) Brewer; four grandchildren: Zachery Brewer, Jessica (DJ) Wilder, Julia Brewer, and Nathanial “Manny” Brewer, all of Decatur; one sister, Jacqueline McDowell of Angola, IN; brother-in-laws: Joe (Judy) Geiger of Bull Head City, AZ and Tony Rex of Albion, IN. Moe was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Angelica Brewer in 1997. Funeral services for Moe will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 9, 2016 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home – Decatur with Rev. James Voorman officiating . Burial will follow in the Decatur Cemetery. Friends and family will be received on Thursday, September 8, 2016 from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home – Decatur and one hour prior to services on Friday. In lieu of flowers Connie and her family request that memorials be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Decatur or Family LifeCare – Hospice.
