Melvin Earl Hanni, 76 years old of Carmel, Indiana and a former resident of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Monday, September 26, 2016 at Carmel Health & Living Community following a lengthy illness with Parkinson’s Disease.
He was born on Wednesday, May 29, 1940 the son of the late Vincent Hanni and the late Helen (Williams) Zimmerman.
Melvin served in the Indiana National Guard for two years.
He served as Commodore of Fort Wayne Power Squadron in 1977; was a member of the Bay Pointe Yacht Club; and was a Volunteer Adams Township Firefighter. He was known as the “Neighborhood Mr. Fix It” with a passion for boating.
Melvin graduated from Decatur High School in 1958. He retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne, Indiana with 25 years of service. After his retirement, he worked for GELCO Truck Leasing for eight years.
Surviving are his son, Michael (Judy) Hanni of Noblesville, IN; son, Gary (Donna) Hanni of St. Marys, GA; daughter, Susan (Andrew) Meador of Morristown, IN; daughter, Judy (Steven) McMichael of New Haven, IN; brother, Ernest (Patti) Hanni of Tom Bean, TX; and five grandchildren, Mark (Jessica) Hanni; Christopher Meador; Kaitlin (Justin) Lothamer; Alyssa McMichael; & Victoria Meador.
Preceding Melvin in death were a grandson, Jacob Hanni and a sister, Eileen Lawrence.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, September 29, 2016 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Pastor David Koenemann officiating. Interment will follow in the M.R.E. Cemetery in Berne, Indiana.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Thursday .
