Richard L. Harman

Richard L. “Dick” Harman, 64, of Decatur passed away early Saturday morning, December 10, 2016 at his residence.

He was born on February 11, 1952 in Decatur, Indiana to Donald C. & Alice (Sheets) Harman. He married Linda L. Gerber on November 4, 1972 at Salem United Church of Christ, Magley.

Dick started working at nine years old at Harman’s Meat Market in Decatur. He worked with his father and learned to cut meat and take orders over the phone through high school. After high school, he was a meat cutter at Scott’s in Decatur. He was the body shop manager for Schwartz Ford in Decatur for five years. In 1980, he started Harman’s Auto Sales & Repair in Decatur. Dick loved working on older model cars and convertibles.

He was a member of Salem United Church of Christ, Magley and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Decatur. Dick was an avid Chicago Bears fan and would never miss a game. He enjoyed spending time with his two sons and daughters-in-law and his grandsons. He also enjoyed boating on Morse Reservoir in Noblesville, Indiana.

He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Harman of Decatur; two sons, Donald A. (Aubris) Harman of Noblesville & Daniel J. (Rachel) Harman of Baton Rouge, LA; two sisters, Marilyn Whitman of Decatur & Connie Meyer of Angola; two grandsons, Arthur L. and Asher L Harman both of Noblesville; three sisters-in-law, Gloria (Bill) Miller of Bluffton; Barb Moser of Indianapolis; & Deb Harman of New Haven; brother-in-law, Richard Gerber of Decatur; aunt, Martha Reef of Decatur; uncle, Doyle Sheets of Angola; and cousins, Dave & Marilyn Gerber of Bluffton. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, & cousins in the area.

Dick was preceded in death by twin children in infancy, Matthew & Elizabeth Harman; a sister & brother-in-law, Carolyn & Gary Stefanek; and a brother, Daniel J. Harman.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 16, 2016 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Pastor Steve Hildebrand officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem United Church of Christ Cemetery, Magley.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, December 15, 2016 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur .

Preferred memorials are to Salem United Church of Christ, Magley; the American Cancer Society; or the League for the Blind.
