E. Joan Hoffman

Joan Hoffman, 90 years old, of Decatur, passed away on Monday, March 27, 2017 in the Adams Memorial Hospital in Decatur where she had been admitted earlier that day and her death was unexpected.

She was born on October 30, 1926 in Allen County, Indiana the daughter of the late Clarence R. Pape and the late Emma (Heckley) Pape. Joan was united in marriage to Fred R. Hoffman on December 2, 1945 and he preceded her in death on April 19, 2007.

She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church - Decatur.

Joan was such a good poker player that Fred would take her to Vegas to play Texas Hold'em and try her skills there. Fred and Joan enjoyed fishing and spending time at their lake cottage on Coldwater Lake in Michigan. Family and friends were very important to Joan; she spent much time with her grandson and great grandchildren. Her effect on them can be seen as the grandchildren spent much time visiting her in her later years.

Joan was the self-employed owner of Joan's Tax Service in Decatur since 1972. Prior to the establishment of her tax service, she was the manager of H & R Block in Decatur from 1965 - 1972. From 1957 - 1958, she and her husband owned and operated the Ossian Hot Dog Drive In. Politically active in the local Democratic Party, Joan was a Precinct Committee Woman for 30 years; member of the Decatur City Council from 1976 - 1980; Board of Public Works from 1976 - 1980; and Parks and Recreation Board from 1980- 2002 where she was also a former president. She also served as an acting mayor on a few instances during Mayor Harold Miller's last term in office.

Surviving are her son, Daniel T. (Jacklyn K.) Hoffman of Decatur, IN; grandson, Myles F. (Amy) Hoffman of Berne, IN; sister, Maxine Brandyberry of Ft. Wayne, IN; and 2 great-grandchildren: Hunter White and Mylee Hoffman.

Preceding Joan in death were 2 sisters: Juanita McBride and Mary Lu Clifton.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 31, 2017 in the Zion Lutheran Church, Decatur with Rev. James Voorman officiating. Interment will follow in the Decatur Cemetery.

Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, March 30, 2016 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home- Decatur and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday.

Preferred memorials are to Amedisys Home Health Services or Lutheran Social Services.
