Betty J Fifer

Betty J. Fifer , 95 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2017 at Adams Woodcrest in Decatur.

She was born on Tuesday, February 14, 1922 in Jay County, Indiana the daughter of the late Albert Degler and the late Birdie (Mangas) Degler. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to Richard E. Fifer on June 16, 1946, who preceded her in death on March 7, 1999.

Betty was a member of First United Methodist church in Decatur and volunteered at the church thrift shop. She was a former member of the O.E.S. in Decatur as well as being a member of the Red Hat Society.

She was employed at CTS in Berne for 18 years in production, retiring in 1984. During World War II, she contributed to the war effort at home by being a key punch operator for the United States Navy, the precursor to the computer operator. She started in Dayton, Ohio and was later transferred to Oakland, California. Betty enjoyed her grandchildren, gardening, knitting and loved winters in Florida with Richard.

Surviving are her daughter, Rebecca L. (Fred D.) Fuelling of Decatur, Indiana; son, Michael D. (Lea Ann) Fifer of Monroeville, Indiana, Edward E. (Brenda) Fifer of Monroeville, Indiana; sister, Ruth Gillett of Portland, Indiana, eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Preceding Betty in death were three sisters, Mary Esther Jetter, Florence Phillips & Katherine Smith along with a brother, Clarence Degler.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, April 21, 2017 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Rev. Amy Covington officiating. Interment will follow at a later date in the Gravel Hill Cemetery in Bryant, Indiana.

Friends will be received from 4-8 p.m., Thursday, April 20 in the Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to services Friday at the funeral home.


In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given in Betty's name to the following organizations: to Adams County Community Foundation ~ Cancer Fund or Heart Fund; or to Family LifeCare.
