Richard A. Wagner , 84 years old of Decatur, Indiana, passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at his daughter’s residence following a brief illness.
He was born on Saturday, February 4, 1933 in Altoona, Pennsylvania the son of the late Freddie B. Wagner and the late Ruth (Megahan) Wagner. He married Margaret E. McCaulley on March 5, 1954 in Altoona, Pennsylvania and she preceded him in death on June 1, 2007.
Richard was a member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church & the American Legion Post #43 where he was a long-time member of the Post 43 Color Guard.
He retired at the rank of Staff Sergeant from the United States Army in October of 1976 with 22 years of service. During his service in the Army, he was a Drill Instructor in addition to providing service during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Following his retirement from the Army, he had also worked as a salesman for Bunny Bread & part-time at K-mart Corporation in Decatur, being the first contact that most people had as they entered the store.
Volunteering in his community was important to Richard. He gave of his time to Meals on Wheels; the community Wednesday evening meals at First United Methodist Church in Decatur; St. Mark's United Methodist Church Food Pantry in Decatur; Red Bird Mission Trips; and he played cards with the residents and called Bingo at Woodcrest and Evergreen Assisted Living Complex.
Surviving are his daughters, Karen Forster & Penny (Brian) Henkenius both of Decatur; seven grandchildren, Brian (Amanda) Forster; Jason (Meaghan) Coleman; Allen Coleman; Brianna Henkenius; Chelsea Henkenius; Andrea Henkenius and Dustin Henkenius; & three great-grandchildren, Rosemary Forster, Nathaniel Coleman, and Graeme Coleman.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra L. Wagner.
A Memorial Service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 8, 2017 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Decatur with Rev. Chris Gadlage officiating. Interment will take place at Arlington Memorial Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia next to his wife.
Friends will be received for one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday.
Preferred memorials are to American Legion Post #43 Color Guard or St. Mark's United Methodist Church.
