Jack G. Gilbert , 79, of Monroeville, Indiana passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was born on August 8, 1938 in Allen County, Indiana the son of the late Roy H. Gilbert and the late Helen B. (Shie) Gilbert - Small. He married Phyllis Castleman on November 29, 1958 at St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville and she survives after 59 years of marriage!
He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Monroeville and the Horseman's Benevolent Protective Association (HBPA).
Jack retired in 1988 after 27 years of service at B.F. Goodrich in Woodburn where he was a foreman. He also trained and raced Thoroughbred horses throughout his life.
He loved basketball of any kind, but especially loved IU basketball. In addition, he loved the Oregon Ducks College Football Team. Despite his love of horses and sports, Jack was the most passionate about his family and their activities.
Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Gilbert of Monroeville, IN; daughter, Kristy (Mark) Gilbert-Kramer of Woodburn; daughter, Sara (Steven) Wyss of Fort Wayne; son, Tim Gilbert of Decatur; daughter-in-law, Pam (Randy) Scherer of Monroeville; step-brother, Joe Small of Monroeville; brother-in-law, Ron Trabel of Monroeville; four grandchildren, Jessica Gilbert; Jamie Scheumann; Mime Gilbert; & Samuel Wyss; five step-grandchildren, John Swygart, Jr.; Adam Swygart; Jessica Ross; Tasha Hall; & Lacey Kramer; two great-grandchildren, Emma May & Elijah Gilbert; and four step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jeffrey Gilbert and a sister, Cynthia Trabel.
A prayer service will be held at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at St. Rose Catholic Church. Interment will follow in the Monroeville Memorial Cemetery.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 29 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville. Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are to Parkview Hospice; Masses; St. Rose Catholic School; or Monroeville Fire Department.
