Donald L. Suman , 84, of Decatur, IN passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2017 at Swiss Village in Berne.
He was born on Tuesday, November 15, 1932 in St. Mary's Township, Adams County, Indiana the son of the late Harry Suman and the late Bessie (Drummands) Suman. He married Jane E. Ross on November 23, 1956 at Mt. Zion United Brethren Church in Bobo.
Don was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army, serving his country in Germany during the period immediately following the Korean War.
He was employed at Central Soya in Decatur (now Bunge) for 20 years, working in the bag plant. Following his time at Soya, he worked at CTS in Berne for six years and then retired from Roman Meal in 1994 following six years of service. Don was also known for his shearing skills with sheep. He continued this hobby for 50 years, starting with his brother, Gordy, and continuing with his son, Ernie who learned this skill that he still uses today.
Don loved drinking coffee at TJ's in Willshire and at Community Markets in Decatur along with fishing. In his spare time, he loved his dog Sammy Lee and gardening…sharing his success with others.
He attended Mt. Zion United Brethren Church in Bobo.
Survivors include his wife of 60 + years, Jane Suman of Decatur; son, Pastor Ernest Lee (Becky) Suman of Decatur; two daughters, Linda (Michael) Hakes, Jr. & Kathy (Dennis) Hess both of Decatur; & two brothers, Rev. Floyd (Ellen) Suman of Kentucky & Rev. Harold (Lorena) Suman of Defiance, OH. He is also survived by nine grandchildren, John Suman; Jill (Ryan) Moore; Tony Hakes; Nathasha Hakes; Patrick (Ally) Hakes; Zackary Hakes; Jaymee Hess; Stephanie Hess; & Nathan Hess; and 12 great-grandchildren, Gracy Marie Suman; Dakotta Suman; Max Suman; Josheb Moore; Jubilee Moore; Lilly Carol; Gage Carol; Danny Hakes; Ella Hakes; Reece Cobb; Chanler Cobb; & Sophie Cobb.
Don was preceded in death by two sisters, Dora Rayl & Ruth Hurst; and eight brothers, Kenneth Suman, Gordon Suman, Lester Suman, Otho Suman, John Suman, Walter Suman, Earl Suman, & Harry Suman, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 24, 2017 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Pastor Wes Kuntzman officiating. Interment will follow in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Decatur with Military Graveside Services conducted by the American Legion Post #43 Color Guard.
Friends will be received from 1 to 5 p.m., Saturday, September 23 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur and one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Sunday.
Preferred memorials are to Mt. Zion United Brethren Church or to the family.
