Irene F. (Sorg) Shelburne , 92, of Hoagland, Indiana passed away Saturday, October 14, 2017 at her residence following a brief illness.
She was born on Wednesday, April 1, 1925 in Allen County, Indiana the daughter of the late Alphonse Sorg and the late Virginia (Minnich) Sorg. She married Leon Shelburne on July 1, 1944 St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hessen Cassel and he preceded her in death on August 3, 1989.
Irene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Hessen Cassel, as well as part of the Rosary Sodality and assisted in the decoration of the church for religious holidays. She was also involved with the St. Joseph Quilters at Hessen Cassel. Irene was also a member of the Fort Wayne Settler's Club Inc. where she worked in the Herb Garden and helped at the Johnny Appleseed Festival.
Before she was married, Irene worked at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, Wayne Candy, and then International Harvester during World War II. Following her marriage to Leon, she became a homemaker. After her children were raised she pursued her candle business, called Irene's Candle Corner and assisted her husband in the operation of Shelburne Marble and Stone out of their house.
Irene also enjoyed hand quilting and made many baby quilts for donation to the Woman's Care Center in Fort Wayne. Each grandchild and great-grandchild was also the recipient of her hand made quilting skills. She never saw a weed she couldn't stand… she loved her garden. This past August, she was still out pulling weeds!
Survivors include three sons, Forest “Woody” (Sue) Shelburne & David (Norma) Shelburne both of Hoagland & Glenn (Cheryl) Shelburne of Auburn; four daughters, Susan (Darrell) Will of Hoagland; Sally (Stan) Scheumann of Fort Wayne; Sheila (Mark) Riley of Monroeville; & Jeanine (Brian) Carpenter of Auburn; four sisters, Marguerite “Margie” Meyers; Jeannette Klingenberger; & Victoria Vachon all of Fort Wayne & Helene Spieth of Monroeville; two brothers, Russell "Butch" (Sharon) Sorg of Yoder & Ronald (Carole) Sorg of Hoagland; brother-in-law, Ed Adams of Celina, OH; 21 grandchildren, Tammy (Steve) Gladding; Matt (Erica) Shelburne; Julianne (Gregg Ducharme) Will; Valerie (James Boozer) Will; Jessica (Drew) Ham; Curt (Kelly) Shelburne; Christy (Darren) Powell; Andrew (Gabriela) Shelburne; Michael (Maria) Shelburne; Jeffery (Tatum Ritchie) Shelburne; Amber (Austin) Lake; Megan Scheumann; Joel Scheumann; Carley Scheumann; Joshua (Betsy) Riley; Jacob (Amy) Riley; Jennifer (Brian) Clifton; Jill (Jacob) Smoker; Jordan Riley; Caleb Carpenter; and Kara Carpenter; and 32 great-grandchildren, Georgia Gladding; Caroline Gladding; Jonathan Gladding; Virginia Gladding; Brendin Shelburne; Hannah Shelburne; Mia Stephenson; Jada Boozer; Janae Boozer; Paige Ham; Margo Ham; Grace Shelburne; Taylor Shelburne; Brooke Shelburne; Katherine Powell; Nathaniel Powell; Violet Powell; ; Augustine Shelburne; Lillyanna Shelburne; Catherine Shelburne; Madison Shelburne; Waverleigh Shelburne; Ian Lake; Melody Lake; Jonah Lake; Oliver Riley; Dorothy Riley; Emmett Riley; Makayla Riley; Madelyn Riley; Abigail Clifton; & Catherine Smoker.
She was preceded in death by a son, Allen Shelburne in 1958; a stillborn daughter, Patricia Shelburne; as well as a sister. Bernadette Adams.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, October 21, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hessen Cassel with Fr. William Kummer officiating. Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Hessen Cassel.
Friends will be received from 1 to 4 & 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, October 20 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel in Monroeville and one hour prior to the mass Saturday at the church . A Rosary service will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Preferred memorials are Masses; St. Joseph Hessel Cassel Food Bank; or Parkview Hospice.
