Gary L. Comer, 73, of Hoagland, Indiana passed away Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne following a stroke that was suffered on Monday at his residence.

He was born on Tuesday, March 14, 1944 in Fort Wayne, Indiana the son of the late Donald L. Comer and the late Mary Elizabeth (Waldrop) Comer. He married Barbara J. Kneller on June 7, 1969 at Faith United Methodist Church in Silver Lake, Indiana.

He was veteran in the U.S. Air National Guard during the Vietnam era & served 14 years.

Gary was a former elder and deacon at St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen where he was confirmed on May 24, 1975. He attended North Side High School in Fort Wayne and graduated in 1962. He belonged to the Heritage Lions Club in Hoagland where he served as president four times and had been elected as the incoming president for 2018-2019. He held other local and district offices in the Lions Club, including Melvin Jones Fellow. Gary also belonged to the Shifter's Car Club in Auburn, Indiana.

He retired as a project engineer for Navistar in 2001 after 38 years of service. Gary then worked as a resident engineer for Alphabet at Navistar and retired from Alphabet in 2009 after eight years, providing 46 years of service as a project engineer.

Gary loved cars, cars, cars, warm weather, water skiing, & our country.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara J. Comer of Hoagland; two sons, Bret (Stephanie) Comer of Fort Wayne & Bart (Lindsay) Comer of Hoagland; brother, Michael W. Comer of Carmichael, CA; sister, Judith A. Notestine of Fort Wayne; three grandchildren, Cassidy Comer, Austin Comer, & Lia Comer; four nephews; & two nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen with Pastor Peter Brock officiating. Interment will follow in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery, Bingen in Decatur.

Friends will be received from 2 to 5 & 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, December 11 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur 7 one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church .

Preferred memorials are to St. John Lutheran Church, Bingen General Fund or Heritage Lions Club.
