Carl F. Thieme, 85, of Decatur, Indiana passed away January 20, 2018 at Adams Woodcrest. He was born on Wednesday, November 9, 1932 in Union Township, Adams County, Indiana the son of the late Charles Thieme and the late Flora (Gallmeier) Thieme. Carl married the love of his life Elaine Ruth Blakey on June 24, 1956 at Immanuel Lutheran Church.
Carl had the honor of serving his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict serving from 1953-1955. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a rural letter carrier in Decatur for 39 years and also belonged to the Indiana Rural Letter Carriers Association. He was an extremely talented taxidermist and was also a retired farmer.
He graduated from Monmouth High School in 1951, was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, and Lutheran Layman League. Carl belonged to the American Legion Post #43 where he was a past Commander and member of the Color Guard. He was an Adams County Veteran's Service Officer, a life member of the Korean Veterans Association and the VFW in Decatur.
Carl also belonged to the National Rifle Association, Adams County Bowling Association, was a life member of Adams County Historical Association, and charter member of the Union Township Lions Club.
He loved fishing in the family pond and spending time with the family at the cabin on the pond that he and his grandson planned and built together. Carl was an avid hunter and outdoorsman.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine R. Thieme of Decatur, IN; son, Kenneth D. (Susan) Thieme of Ft. Wayne, IN; son, Dr. Douglas A. (Erin) Thieme of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, daughter; Janet (David) Honeywell of Decatur, IN; sister, Laurina (Marvin) Conrad of Decatur, IN; sister, Leona Meyer of Ossian, IN; sister, Marilyn Meyer of Ossian, IN; sister-in-law, Ella Thieme of Decatur, IN; five grandchildren, Megan (Stuart) Chmielewski, Derek (Janine) Thieme, Maureen Thieme, Ryan Thieme and Kathleen Thieme; and one great-granddaughter, Vera Chmielewski.
Carl was preceded in death by his grandson, Mitchell Thieme; brother, Wilbert Thieme; sister, Regina Wise; and his brothers-in-law, Tom Wise, Norman Meyer, and Marvin Meyer.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, January 26, 2018 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor David Koeneman officiating.
Interment will follow in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery with Military Graveside Honors by the American Legion Post #43.
Friends will be received from 2 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 25 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur, and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.
