Maurice H. “Maurie” Scheumann , 78, of Hoagland, Indiana passed away Sunday, January 21, 2018 at Visiting Nurse & Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
He was born on Monday, April 17, 1939 in Marion Township, Allen County, Indiana the son of the late Ludolph Scheumann and the late Malinda L. (Hormann) Scheumann. He was united in marriage to Kay Heckler on March 14, 1959 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Monroeville.
Maurie retired in 2008 from Zollner Corporation after 43 years of service as a supervisor and in quality control.
He was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Soest in Fort Wayne. Singing was an important part of Maurie's life. At Emmanuel, he was involved with the mixed choir and men's chorus. He was also a charter member of the Lutheran Chorale and also was involved with the Lutheran Men of Song in which he participated until his health prevented him. Maurie was also a member of the Hoagland Area Advancement Association (HAAA) and the Zollner Quarter Century Club.
Aside from family and church, sports were an important part of Maurie's life. He was a Cubs fan and also watched IU Basketball. He participated in church leagues for basketball and softball for many years. He also coached the Soest Stealer's women's softball team and the Hoagland Merchants men's fastpitch team. He attended many of his children and grandchildren's athletic activities and enjoyed watching their teams participate.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Scheumann of Hoagland; two sons, Maurice Kevin (Lynne) Scheumann of Petaluma, CA & Mark Scheumann of Decatur; four daughters, Bambi (Tom) Keller of Woodburn, Dawn (Gary) Felger of Lohman, MO, Joy (Terry) Scott of Hoagland & Amy (Rev. Jon) Dickmander of Brule, NE; three brothers, Karl (Cindy) Scheumann of Fort Wayne, Dennis (Rose Marie) Scheumann of New Haven, & Thomas (Mary Lou) Scheumann of Decatur; three sisters, Kathleen (Paul) Meyer of New Haven, Ruth Scheumann of Milford, NH, & Lynnda (David) Wilson of Monroeville; brother-in-law, Vernold Woebbeking; 22 grandchildren; & three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sisters, Barbara Woebbeking, Phyllis Ruhl, and Rita Tombaugh and a brother, Ronald Scheumann in infancy.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 26, 2018 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Soest located at 9909 Wayne Trace in Fort Wayne . Rev. Josef Henning will officiate. Interment will follow in the Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Soest.
Friends will be received from 2 to 5 & 6 to 8 p.m., Thursday, January 25 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Soest and also from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Friday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, Maurie's family suggests preferred memorials be given to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Soest; Worship Anew (Worship for Shut-Ins); or Cancer Services of Northeast Indiana.
