James W. "Jim" Schaffner

January 13, 1942 — March 15, 2018

James W. “Jim” Schaffner , 76, of Decatur, Indiana and formerly of Willshire, Ohio, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2018 at CHP Home Care & Hospice - Van Wert Inpatient Center.

He was born on Tuesday, January 13, 1942 in Willshire, Ohio the son of the late Paul Schaffner and the late Eva (Marbaugh) Schaffner. Jim was united in married to Ann (Ranly) Schaffner on May 14, 1971 and she preceded him in death on July 30, 1986. On June 19, 2015, he married Tina Palmer.

Jim was honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corp in 1964 after being drafted for the Vietnam War.

He was a member of the St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Decatur & also a former member of the American Legion Post #207 in Willshire, OH.

Jim was the Valedictorian of the Willshire High School Class of 1960 and retired from Decatur Salvage in 2007. He had also been employed at Farmers Grain and Feed in Willshire for over 20 years. He was involved in Willshire where he served on the Town Council and also the Water Board. Jim also helped coach baseball in the Willshire Community. He enjoyed reading books and completing his daily crossword puzzle. His concern was for others, willing to help anyone whenever they needed assistance.

Survivors include his wife, Tina Schaffner of Decatur; two sons, Gary (Denise) Schaffner of Holly Springs, NC & Dan (Kimberly) Schaffner of Rockford, OH; two daughters,   Jodi (Ron) Diller of Coldwater, OH & Staci Dotson of Van Wert, OH; five sisters, Nancy Hildbold & Martha Jarrett both of Celina, OH; Rachael Smalley of Universal City, TX, Eleanor (Leon) Blubaugh of Waynesfield, OH, Laura Steck of Tehachopi, CA; three brothers, Paul (Sharon) Schaffner of Galion, OH, William Robin (Laure) Schaffner of Cookville, TN, & Francis (Sandy) Schaffner of Rockford, OH; & sister-in-law, Marlene Schaffner of Willshire, OH. He is also survived by12 grandchildren, Mark Schaffner, Ryan Schaffner, Lee Cupick, Taylor Schaffner, Kelsey Dotson, Madison Schaffner, Evan Diller, Adam Diller, Logan Dotson, Alyssa Diller, Trey Dotson, & Trevor Dotson; one great-grandson; & one great-granddaughter on the way.

He was preceded in death by his first wife's parents, Carl and Mary (Bruns) Ranly; three brothers, Roland (Carm) Marbaugh, George Schaffner, & John (Ann) Schaffner; & three sisters, Monica Schaffner, Phyllis Roose, & Ruth Smalley.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur with Father Dave Ruppert officiating. Interment will follow in the Willshire Cemetery in Willshire, Ohio with military graveside honors to be conducted by the American Legion Post #207 of Willshire.

Friends will be received from 2 to 5 & 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 19 at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home in Decatur & one hour prior to services Tuesday at the funeral home.
