Joseph Furtner, long time Berne resident, 98, passed away on Friday, November 11, 2016 at his home after a long illness. He was surrounded by his family and under the compassionate care of Family Hospice. Joe was born on September 16, 1918 in Chicago, Ill. to Joseph & Maude Furtner.
His family moved to Linden, NJ where he lived until he joined the Marines during WW II. He served bravely on Guadalcanal.He moved to Hollywood, CA where he met the love of his life, Trilby Lou Walker. They were married on July 10, 1948. Joe was called once again to serve his country in the Korean Conflict. After his service, they began their family in Southern California and were blessed with 3 children, Paul, Lori, and Janice.
Joe Trilby and Janice moved to Berne in 1973 after Joe took a job in management with Micro Precision where he worked until retirement. Reading was a passion for him and he was honored to serve on the Berne Library Board. Joe valued family and was a loyal friend to many.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, 3 children, 3 grandchildren, David, Michael, & Kyra and 1 great-grandchild, Penelope.
Preceding in death are his parents and sister, Violette May Palmer-Esty.
Joe's life was full of love and grand adventures. He will be sorely missed.
Private family services are planned later.
Preferred memorials are to the Berne Library.
