H. Richard Beitler, 98, Berne passed away Sunday morning on April 17, 2016 at Swiss Village where he was a resident. He was born to Hugo and Gertrude Hirschy Beitler on August 31, 1917 in Adams County. He married Margaret Belle Sprunger on October 17, 1948.
Richard graduated from Berne High School class of 1935. He was a member of the Cross Community Church where he taught Sunday School for 70 years, member of the Sanctuary choir, was an elder, deacon, Sunday School superintendent, and chairman of the church Consistory. He was employed for many years at Dunbar Furniture in the upholstery department. Dick was a veteran serving in WW II in the US Army while in the Phillipines. He was a former Boy Scout Leader for Troop #68, sang in the Edelweis Chorus, and a member of the Mennonite Choral Society. He enjoyed gardening, swimming, writing stories, reading, and studying the Bible. Dick also was an avid sports fan attending many of South Adams events and his grandchildren's activities.
Survivors include 4 sons and 2 daughters. sons; Paul Beitler of Bluffton, Samuel(Jayne)Beitler of Evansville, Ryan(Brenda)Beitler of Berne, Ted(Gretta)Beitler of Berne, daughters; Ellen(Wayne)King of Clarksville, TN, Carolyn(Bryce)Hoffman of Monroe, 12 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
Preceding in death are his parents, wife, infant son Thomas, grandson, Trent Hoffman, brothers; James, Calvin, Chester, Roger, and sister, Geraldine Beitler.
Funeral services are Thursday, April 21, 2016 at the Cross Community Church at 10:30 AM with visitation 1 hour prior to services. Visitation is also Wednesday, April 20 from 2 to 8 PM at the Swiss Village Chapel. Officiating is Pastor Chris Kruchkow. Burial is in the MRE Cemetery, Berne with graveside military rites by Berne Post #468.
