Chelsey Calvin (Cal) Miller, age 85, a resident of Monroe, Indiana passed away on June 2, 2011 at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
On February 7, 1953, he married Helen Mae Rinehart, who survives.
He is also survived by 2 daughters, Janet (Tim) Vogleman, Huntington, Indiana and Debra (David) Bowers ,Walkerton, Indiana: 4 grandchildren Dan Bowers, Brooke Vogleman,Matthew Vogleman, and Caleb Bowers and 1 great grandchild, Lydia Bowers. Also surviving is his twin brother's wife, Viola Miller,Goshen, Indiana.
Preceding him in death are his parents, his sisters: Dollie Bauer, Dorothy Miller, his brothers, Warren G. Miller, and his twin, Chalmer Coolidge Miller.
Cal was a World War II Air Force Veteran, where he flew many combat missions in the B17. His plane was shot down in November of 1944 and he was MIA and feared dead for some time. Eventually, he was found and in time, was able to return to his 486th squadron. After the war, he attended and graduated from Purdue University, and went on to work in Henry County Indiana as The Purdue University County Extension Ag and Youth Agent, as well as being the early morning Disc Jockey/Radio Announcer for New Castle Radio. He also worked for the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture as a Soil Conservationist and a Soil Scientist, in Indiana and for a short time in the state of New Mexico. He retired from the Federal Land Bank, where he served as an Associate Vice President in the Louisville, Ky District.
He was a long time member of the Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren where he served as Sunday School Supt. Sunday School teacher and a Deacon.
He loved flying, woodworking, traveling and being with his family.
Family and friends may call at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne, In. on Monday, June 6, from 2 to 8 pm. Funeral services will be at the Pleasant Dale Church of the Brethren on Tuesday, June 7 at 10:30 am with calling 1 hour prior to services.
Officiating is Pastor Jay Carter. Calvin will be laid to rest at the Springhill Cemetery east of Berne.
