Robert G. Miller, 89, a resident of Berne, Indiana passed away at 9:03 a.m. Friday, March 25, 2011 at his residence.

Robert was born on February 23, 1922 in Maza, North Dakota the son of Charles Omer and Della (Ehrsam) Miller. At the age of nine, Charles and Della passed away in an automobile-train accident along with two of Robert’s sisters and one of his brothers. Following the accident, Robert was raised by his foster parents, Rufus and Anna Hirschy. He married Louise Neuenschwander on September 5, 1948 in Berne.

Robert was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Berne, He was a World War II Army Veteran serving in the United States Army in Europe. He was a well known area poultry farmer for over forty years and previously worked for the Berne Lumber Company and Smith Brothers Furniture.

Robert is survived by his wife, Louise Miller of Berne; a son, David (Lois) Miller of Wellsville, New York; a daughter, Janet Miller of Berne; a son, Phillip (Sherry) Miller of Summers, Arkansas; a son, John Miller of Berne; a daughter, Sue (Jack) Shoaf of Berne; a daughter, Sara (Bob) Sprunger of Berne; and a foster sister, Mildred Bissett of Dayton, Ohio. Other survivors include twenty grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his foster parents, three sisters, five brothers, and four foster sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, 2011 at the First Mennonite Church with the Rev. Jeff Linthicum officiating. Interment will be in the M.R.E. Cemetery of rural Berne.

Family and friends will be received from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday, March 28, 2011 at the Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home in Berne and one hour prior to the funeral service at the First Mennonite Church on Tuesday.

Preferred memorials are to the First Mennonite Church or Family Hospice and Palliative Care.
