Paul Mentor “Plug” Herman, 90, a former Berne resident, passed away on Friday, December 24, 2010 at the Hospice Care Unit of St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth, MN. He recently moved to Minnesota to live with his son Ken and daughter-in-law Cindy. He was born on January 9, 1920 in Celina, OH to Mentor and Ramola Herman. He married Juanita Sprunger on January 24, 1942.

For 29 years Paul was a businessman and co-owner of the Coffee Shop in Berne with his wife, Juanita. After retiring from the City of Berne, he and Juanita moved to Lake Wawasee before returning to Berne in 2004.

Paul was a member of the First Mennonite Church of Berne and a WWII veteran having served in the Army Air Corp. He was a lifetime member of the Berne American Legion Post 468. Bowling and golf were his favorite activities for many years. He also enjoyed fishing, boating and water skiing at Lake Wawasee. In later years, he enjoyed playing pool with his friends at Swiss Village.

He is survived by three children: Mike (Janey) Herman of Friendswood, TX; Connie (Jim) Allen of Naples, FL; Ken (Cindy) Herman of Cloquet, MN; 10 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita and a sister Louise Zinn.

The celebration service will be held at 2:00pm, January 8, 2011 in the chapel at Swiss Village, Berne, IN with visitation from 11:30am-1:30pm in the chapel. He will be buried next to Juanita in the MRE Cemetery, Berne. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be given to a missionary couple that Paul and Juanita have supported for a number of years. Memorial gifts should be marked ‘for the support of Ralph and Joyce Anderson’ and sent to: OC International, P.O. Box 36900, Colorado Springs, CO 80936-6900.

Memorial service on Saturday, January 8, 2:00 pm at Swiss Village Chapel. Officiating are Pastors Ken Robinson & Jerry Flueckiger. Visiting Saturday 11:30am to 1:30pm at Swiss Village Chapel.
